Food Sovereignty as the Foundation

On October 09, 2021, we hosted Food Sovereignty as the Foundation at Culxr House in North Omaha. We discussed the importance of food sovereignty and regenerative agricultural methods such as food forests that can be utilized to create high yield systems that serve communities once established. It was also an opportunity to connect community members with those already doing the work of combating food injustice in ways such as gardening/farming, beekeeping, and story telling.

Seeds are Currency

Seeds are Currency was hosted at Fabric Lab on Saturday, November 13 from 1:00-3:30 PM. Speakers discussed the importance of seed saving, and explored themes such as the right to open pollination, the preservation of culture, and the importance of genetic diversity. Attendees learned just how political the act of saving seeds is, and why it is crucial for achieving food sovereignty.

Speakers included Dr. Rudi Mitchell of the Omaha Nation, Luis Marcos of Comunidad Maya Pixan Ixim, and Leah Wambui of Hekima for the Future.

Community members brought seeds to add to Fabric Lab’s newly constructed seed bank and to swap with the community. Baked goods were provided by Source Farms.
