Hekima for the Future

Hekima means Wisdom

Welcome to Hekima for the Future. Hekima means wisdom in Swahili, and we draw on the wisdom of those who came before us to reconnect with our roots and the Earth to ensure food sovereignty and self-sufficiency. We want to reclaim wisdom that was lost so those coming after us never forget. We choose to look forward to and foster a future where we can thrive instead of just survive. We do this by building regenerative systems that serve our communities and by utilizing agricultural methods that help to replenish the Earth instead of depleting it. We focus on designing systems that work in harmony to be both a place of peace, and a powerful tool for fighting food injustice.

We Design Regenerative Systems

We focus on regenerative systems that are life giving - to the people, to the animals and insects, and to the soil. We do not employ methods that deplete or take. Instead we focus on full system designs that utilize ancient agricultural methods that have recently been rebranded as new or alternative. Our designs are largely perennial based and mimic natural ecosystems by companion planting on a large scale.

Once established, these are high yield systems requiring very little maintenance. They become balanced systems the work in harmony instead of requiring forceful methods & constant upkeep. These spaces are full of plants that are edible, or have another purpose like attracting pollinators or fixing nitrogen in the soil. Most of these plants have multiple uses, and ideally many are native to the area.

At Hekima for the Future we believe that regenerative systems are the way forward for a community-based food production method that restores the health of the soil instead of stripping it of nutrients and its biodiversity. They allow people to insert themselves into the food production system in a way that is more likely to foster community, and therefore succeed. We want to create safe spaces where people can come get something healthy to eat. We want to make these systems easily replicable so people can make them in their yards and in open public spaces with minimal effort and stress. This is a single method, but it is a powerful one for fighting food insecurity.

We Educate

Through the design and implementation of each system, we educate the community on regenerative practices that will sustain the health of the system. We focus on resilience and longevity instead of short term gain. We emphasize culturally sensitive and native plant selection that will support both the people and the soil. We also host events, lead workshops, and distribute educational material.
